A message must receive a true 'Pass' result in either SPF or DKIM in order to pass DMARC. In addition to the base protocol, there must be identifier alignment.
Alignment
In the DKIM instance, this means that the DKIM-Signature d= domain must equal the domain of the From header.
In the SPF instance, this means that the domain verified by SPF the SMTP conversation (mail-from normally, but if that is empty then SPF falls back to the hostname specified in the helo/ehlo) must equal the domain of the From header.
